Middle school anchor
Orchard Valley Waldorf School in East Montpelier, Vermont, is seeking a creative and experienced teacher with strong administrative skills to serve as our Middle School Anchor. The Middle School Anchor (MSA) is a new position created to complement and support the work of Middle School Class Teachers. The MSA will hold a combination of teaching and administrative responsibilities that contribute to the sustainability of a consistent, high quality Waldorf Middle School program at Orchard Valley Waldorf School.
This onsite position is part of the Grades team, reporting to the Collegial Circle. Start date is flexible between March 1, 2023 and July 1, 2023.
Teaching Responsibilities
- Specific teaching responsibilities will be determined by the skills and expertise of the MSA. These would include one or more of the following for the 2023-2024 school year:
Cyber Civics (Gr. 6/7)
Math or Language Arts skills classes (Gr. 6/7)
Guest teach a Main Lesson blocks (Gr. 6/7)
- Recess coverage
- Support parent education and middle school outreach efforts
Collegial responsibilities
Attend weekly Grades meetings on Thursday afternoons
Attend weekly Faculty/Staff meetings on Thursday afternoons
Administrative Responsibilities
Work in conjunction with Class Teachers to develop and support:
An organizational structure for after-school clubs
An on-site mentor program for middle school students
Rites-of passage
Establish and maintain connections for community service projects
Organize the Bolton ski program
Coordinate field trips, including making reservations, organizing fundraisers, securing transportation, etc.
OVWS is a small, rural school set on a beautiful 55-acre campus in the heart of Vermont. We are a Waldorf school currently providing curriculum from infancy, at our year-round Sweet Clover Nursery child care, through Grade 7, sometimes working in combined classes and intending to continue through Grade 8. Specialty classes include Handwork, Woodworking, Music, Movement, Spanish (Grades 3-7) and Russian (Grade 1 and 2) and On the Land, an outdoor education program. Our campus sits on one of the upper branches of the Winooski river. Our students help care for goats and sheep as part of our impulse to deepen our connection to the natural world around us.
Our teachers and administration are expected to be working with the children and land stewardship at the center with an explicit commitment to engaging in Diversity, Equity and Inclusion work both in themselves and as a faculty/staff body.
Our school is located 8 miles from Montpelier, Vermont’s capital. It's a small town with big city amenities - a lively arts and music scene, great restaurants, and an active community life.
Qualifications
Energy, commitment, and vitality for working with middle school children
Enthusiasm for Orchard Valley Waldorf School’s mission, a commitment to OVWS’s values, and a knowledge of OVWS programs
Experience teaching middle school students
Waldorf teacher training, or a willingness to enroll in a training program
Demonstrated ability to collaborate with colleagues
Interest in responsibly innovating the Waldorf curriculum for the 21st-century
Commitment to advancing the work of diversity, equity, inclusion and justice
Proficiency in GSuite and other Web-based applications and comfort with learning new systems and technologies
Ability to work evenings and weekends, as required
Ability to work outdoors on our 55 acre campus in changing weather conditions
Ability to lift up to 40 pounds, walk over uneven terrain, and have good stamina
Valid driver's license
CPR and First Aid training required
This is a part time salaried position starting at 50% FTE for the 2023-24 school year, increasing to 100% FTE for the 2024-25 school year. For a highly qualified applicant, we may be able to combine with other positions to create full time work in 2023-24. Salary range for this part time position is: $19,850-$24,475. Benefits include paid holidays and tuition remission.
